Iraq’s cabinet on 17 April authorized the ministry of electricity “to assign a team” to travel to Iran in the hope of securing reliable power imports for the upcoming summer peak demand season.
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Musa told local media on 21 April that the delegation aims to sign a “new gas supply contract” with Tehran, building on a successful renegotiation of power tariff last month with Iran’s state power firm Tavanir (MEES, 18 March). Baghdad relies on Iran for around 40% of its available summer electricity supplies – both in the form of direct power imports and of imports of Iranian gas to be burnt in Iraqi power plants.
