Tunisia’s waning upstream sector fought back in 2021. After several years of output declines, production of both oil and gas shot up by at least 20% on the back of two key long-delayed projects.

Crude and condensate production increased for the first time in fourteen years, rising by 7,600 b/d to hit 40,100 b/d (see chart 1). The star of the show was local firm Topic’s offshore Halk El Menzel field which started up in January 2021 (MEES, 22 January 2021) and produced 5,800 b/d for year, easily snatching the title of the country’s top producing field.
