The under-development Ta’ziz petrochemicals project at Ruwais is the centerpiece of Adnoc’s growing downstream focus. Foreign partners have been brought in to key first phase development projects such as blue ammonia and methanol facilities at the Ta’ziz Industrial Chemicals Zone, and now Adnoc is turning its attention to the next phase of development.

The second phase will be centered on “a new world-scale, low-carbon footprint steam cracker,” Adnoc announced on 3 November. This facility will “supply feedstocks for the various downstream production units, bringing multiple new product value chains to the UAE for the first time.” No further details were provided on the scale of the planned-cracker, with is currently in the feasibility study phase and is set to begin the design phase in 1Q 2023.
