The Middle East is home to the largest, lowest-cost solar projects in the world. Sound familiar? Replace “solar projects” with “oil reserves” and similar sentences have been de rigueur for decades.

Across the region states are competing to drive down prices and the latest milestone was reached last week with the award of a record-low tariff for solar power of just US¢1.35/kWh for the 2GW AL Dhafra solar PV project in Abu Dhabi (MEES, 31 July). Not just is Al Dhafra the lowest-priced PV project, its scale is also unrivaled. Partners on the project frequently refer to it as the largest single-site solar power project in the world.
