Iran this week introduced smart fuel cards in the four major cities of Tehran, Karaj, Isfahan and Tabriz, in accordance with a plan unveiled in July to curb domestic consumption of gasoline and diesel and their smuggling of these products out of the country (MEES, 19 July).

A previous fuel cards system was in place between 2007 and 2015 (and remains in the border provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan from where smuggling of cut-price Iranian fuel to neighboring Pakistan and Afghanistan is common). (CONTINUED - 240 WORDS)
