Egyptians go to the polls next week to vote on constitutional changes that could see President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi extend his tenure until 2030. Parliament this week overwhelmingly approved the amendments that would increase the presidential term from four years to six and allow Mr Sisi, under a transitional arrangement, to run again in 2024 when his current second term comes to an end.
Egyptians will also be asked whether or not to establish an upper house, headed by the president. The president would appoint one third of the 180 members of the Senate, as it would be called, with the remaining members directly elected. (CONTINUED - 292 WORDS)
