• The continental US only began exporting LNG in February 2016 with the start-up of the first two 4.5mn tons/year trains at the Sabine Pass liquefaction plant in Louisiana. But since then volumes have soared, hitting a record 1.63mn cfd in Q1. This is a record proportion (18.5%) of US gas exports, which at 8.85bn cfd are themselves massively up.

• The official US export figures are given on a cfd gas basis. But the Q1 total LNG export figure equates to around 2.82mn tons of the super-cooled fuel on a landed basis. Indicative of the speed of the volume ramp up is that the Q1 figure equates to 80% of the total for the whole of 2016 (3.54mn tons) which in itself was more than ten times the 2015 figure, when only one small aged plant in Alaska was exporting.
