US conglomerate General Electric (GE) has announced an operations and maintenance deal with Algeria’s state generator Sonelgaz, which expands on their collaboration under a $2.3bn deal signed in 2013 for the supply of turbines and generators and the construction and operation of a joint venture manufacturing plant in Algeria.

Under the new agreement GE will work with Sonelgaz on operating 10 power plants with a combined 11GW of capacity. The deal includes technology upgrades to increase the energy efficiency of the plants so they can deliver an extra 420MW of power while reducing gas fuel consumption, as well as installing state-of-the-art computerized control and monitoring systems.
