Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Russian state nuclear developer Rosatom signed an agreement this week to proceed with the construction of four nuclear reactors at Dabaa, 170km west of Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast.

The deal was concluded during a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi. Egypt’s Minister of Electricity Muhammad Shakir says the first 1.2GW reactor is due to begin commercial operation in 2026, with three further similar units due to be fully operational in 2029.
