Jordan’s PM Hani al-Mulki has inaugurated a 52.5MW solar PV plant near Ma’an 230km south of Amman, developed by the Shams Ma’an JV of Japan’s Mitsubishi, Qatar’s Nebras and Jordan’s Kawar. The plant was built by US firm First Solar at a cost of $170mn. First Solar was originally a partner in the project company, but divested its stake when it was awarded the EPC deal.

Jordan has already brought 43MW of solar capacity online this year at Ma’an, in three projects led by Norway’s Scatec, while Spain’s Elecnor started up an 80MW wind farm nearby. This takes Jordan’s renewables capacity to 293MW, after the 117MW Tafila wind farm started up last year. (CONTINUED - 163 WORDS)
