With the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 21) just two months away, industry majors including Shell and Total are lobbying to make the voice of oil and gas businesses heard. The International Energy Agency (IEA) executive director Fatih Birol stressed at the Oil & Money conference in London this week that the global energy industry is at the heart of the global climate change debate, with two thirds of global emissions coming from the energy sector. And with growing concerns over the impact the current oil price environment is having on planned investments in the oil and gas industry, and in turn the ability to meet future energy demand growth, Mr Birol once again emphasized the importance of increasing energy efficiency to address climate change issues. Not just with respect to fossil fuels, but across the entire energy spectrum.
