With peak demand on its two key grids hitting 4.9GW last year and set to double by 2020, Oman is ramping up power plant construction.

Peak power demand in Oman’s two main electricity networks – the Main Interconnected System (MIS) and Salalah grid – increased more slowly in 2013 than in recent years, according to Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP). MIS peak demand increased by 4.1% to 4.46GW, while Salalah showed an 8% rise to 420MW. This compares with an annual average 2008-13 growth rate of 6.6% for the MIS and 8.3% for Salalah (see chart).
