Libyan electricity utility Gecol has drafted in US firm General Electric to provide localized “emergency power” at a time of worsening supply disruptions, particularly where local militias and looters are targeting power plants and transmission equipment. GE is providing four trailer-mounted aeroderivative gas turbines with a combined capacity of 100MW, at a cost of $135mn.

GE said the four units will help to meet summer peak needs by expanding capacity available at the Zawiya and West Tripoli power plants. Two units have been installed and commissioned, six weeks after sites were confirmed in December. Two further units are expected to be operational by the end of March.
