International donors pledged a total of $5.6bn in aid for the reconstruction of Gaza at a 12 October Cairo conference.

This exceeds the $4bn that the Palestinians requested prior to the meeting for the rebuilding of large parts of the Gaza Strip which were heavily bombed by Israel in this summer’s conflict with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which controls Gaza.
