Oman’s Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) and Ministry of Finance have begun a fundamental review of energy policy. John Cunneen, Executive Director of Oman’s Authority for Electricity Regulation (AER), told the Oman Power and Water Summit in Muscat on 5 May that the review was expected to address three issues in power generation and water production: fuel diversity; subsidies; and energy efficiency and sustainable consumption.

“For those of us who believe that the present double-digit rates of growth of electricity demand might not be sustainable under the present model – in which we seem to chase demand by building ever larger power stations that increase our dependency on domestic gas – the energy policy review is both timely and welcome” said Mr Cuneen.
