The US’ ConocoPhillips has emerged as the surprise contender to develop Iraq’s 5.6tcf Akkas gas field. The project, located in Iraq’s western Anbar province (see map), has struggled to move forward for years because of security concerns and infrastructure limitations.

On 25 July, Iraq’s cabinet authorized the oil ministry to sign an MoU with a consortium of ConocoPhillips, US investment firm TI Capital and UK-incorporated Novaterra Energy. The MoU will allow talks covering the “exploration and development of the Akkas field and surrounding areas in Western Iraq.” (CONTINUED - 797 WORDS)
