The Middle East is growing its renewable energy sector at an extraordinary pace. Recently released data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) shows that Middle East capacity expanded by 28.9% last year, its fastest ever annual growth rate and one that outpaced all other regions (see chart 1). This surge was concentrated in a few countries “with Saudi Arabia accounting for the majority of this expansion,” Irena said.
