Solar’s share of Dubai’s power generation mix topped 10% for the first time last year, as 600MW of capacity was added to the MBR Solar Park over the course of 2023. The steady increase in renewables capacity, which now stands at 2.627GW is needed to meet surging power demand, which grew by more than 6% last year to a record 56.50TWh.

The power sector is overseen by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa). Hailing last year’s performance, Dewa Chairman Saeed al-Tayer says “we have achieved the highest annual revenue and operating profit in Dewa’s history. Our electricity generation growth of 6.1%, total installed capacity of 15.7GW with around 17% contributed by renewable sources, peak load of 10.4GW and customer accounts exceeding 1.2 million, are the highest ever reported.” (CONTINUED - 572 WORDS)
