Iran aims to finally complete long-delayed associated gas capture and processing projects by the end of the Iranian year 1404 (March 2026) in order to finally end routine gas flaring. Iran is the third largest flarer of gas globally, burning 17.2bcm (1.6bn cfd) in 2022 according to the World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Tracker (see chart). Flaring intensity had been steadily trending up in recent years, but Iranian efforts to tackle the issue resulted in a dip for 2022.
