Saudi Arabia is holding talks with five international nuclear technology firms for a two-reactor nuclear power plant and is studying options for small modular reactors (SMRs) to be installed off-grid in a variety of applications.

The two-reactor plant and SMRs represent a huge reduction in the kingdom’s nuclear ambitions, compared with a plan announced by government nuclear and renewables agency Kacare in 2011 that called for 16 nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 18GW and an expected investment of more than $80bn (MEES, 3 May 2013).
