Abu Dhabi state utility Adpower on 31 March signed an MoU to develop two large waste-to-energy (WTE) plants: a 90MW plant in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (Mussafah region), and a 60MM plant in the Eastern region. The plants will incorporate moving grate technology to process and burn waste to drive a steam turbine generator set. They will be developed as independent power producer (IPP) projects, although no timeframe has been announced. Abu Dhabi renewables firm Masdar and Sharjah state waste firm Bee’ah are developing a 30MW WTE plant in Sharjah, which is expected to start up in 2021. Dubai Municipality has plans for a 60MW WTE plant in Dubai’s Warsan district, but this has yet to progress (MEES, 2 November 2018).
