Saudi Arabia is joining the shale revolution, advancing plans for its first large-scale unconventional gas project. Saudi Aramco announced on 23 February that it had received regulatory approval for the development of the “Jafurah unconventional gas field”, which it labels “the largest non-associated gas field in the kingdom.”

Aramco says Jafurah contains “200tcf of rich raw gas, which will provide a valuable feedstock for the petrochemical industries.” Taken at face value this implies a more than doubling of Saudi gas reserves from the 185.7tcf end-2019 proven reserves figure. (CONTINUED - 1704 WORDS)
