GCC governments in the last two years have awarded massive utility-scale solar PV projects. Dubai is the pacesetter, with Abu Dhabi, and more recently Saudi Arabia, playing catch up (MEES, 9 February 2018).

GGC power generators have been slow to join the global renewables boom, held back by a combination of readily available oil and gas for burning in power plants inadequate planning and heavily subsidized electricity prices that undermine the economics of solar.
