Iran’s President Hassan Rohani embarked on a two day state visit to neighboring Pakistan on 25 March. A number of agreements to boost bilateral trade were signed, but despite positive statements from Iranian officials, there appears to have been little concrete progress made in moving forward a long-planned gas pipeline.
Six memorandums of understanding (MOU) were inked during the trip with the two countries agreeing to open two new border crossings to facilitate trade. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif says bilateral trade will increase to $5bn by 2021, from current annual levels of around $250mn – a puny sum for two neighboring economic powerhouses.
