Algeria’s dwindling gas output has received a much needed shot in the arm with the start up this week of the Southern Fields expansion project at In Salah in southwest Algeria.
Tie in of the four additional fields is likely to provide a net boost of around 3 bcm/year to Algeria’s gas output, which has been stuck at around 80 bcm/year in recent years. Though Algeria has a pipeline of new gas projects – In Salah southern fields is the big one for this year – repeated delays mean that instead of ramping up overall output, they have done no more than cancel out the decline at existing fields (MEES, 27 November 2015).
