Eni and Sonatrach are expanding cooperation to reduce emissions from Algeria’s oil and gas sector, with a new Memorandum of Intent signed on 17 August building on a 2023 agreement focused on “reducing gas flaring, valorising recovered gas” and mitigating up-stream emissions, the Italian major said. The latest agreement broadens cooperation to methane monitoring and natural CO₂ removal, with Eni describing the initiative as promot-ing “concrete initiatives for the decarbonization of the Oil & Gas sector” in Algeria.
Algeria is one of the world’s biggest gas-flaring countries. The country flared 8.35bcm in 2025, making it the world’s seventh-largest flarer, according to the World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Tracker report. The volume was marginally below the previous year’s 8.38bcm and was equivalent to around 8% of Algeria’s 101.8bcm gas output. (CONTINUED - 198 WORDS)
