Oman has expanded the scope of its Sohar refining and petchems integration program with plans for an $850mn purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) complex.
Oman International Petrochemical Industry Company (Ompet) has invited bids for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the new packaging materials plant. This will be built at Sohar, where work is already under way on a refinery expansion, a plastics project and a products pipeline network.
Ompet, a JV of state firm Oman Oil (50%), Oman’s Takamul Investment (20%) and Korea’s LG (30%), plans to develop the complex in two phases.
The PTA plant will have capacity to produce 1.1mn tons/year, while the PET plant will comprise two 250,000 t/y units, the first of which is due for completion in late 2017.
