Petchems To Dominate MENA 2016 Downstream After 2013-14 CDU Boost

Two giant Saudi petchems complexes will dominate MENA downstream headlines in 2016, whilst key recent Saudi & UAE refinery start-ups hit full capacity.

MENA downstream additions this year will be dominated by Saudi petrochemicals and in particular the Aramco/Dow Sadara joint venture specialty chemicals and plastics complex. Its first polyethylene unit started up this month, and all 26 units are due online in 2016, adding 3.22mn tons/year.

Aramco’s Rabigh 2 JV with Sumitomo is also slated to begin production in 2016. France’s SPIE has been awarded a commissioning contract which will likely see a naphtha cracker and aromatics unit started up first, ready to feed a range of specialty chemicals and polymers units.
