Bapco has awarded a key contract that will see the expansion of Bahrain’s only refinery in tandem with construction of a replacement crude oil pipeline to bring in additional crude feedstock from Saudi Arabia.
Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) has awarded Australia’s WorleyParsons an A$120mn ($87mn) project management contract for an expansion of the country’s sole 267,000 b/d refinery. The expansion would enable the Sitra plant to process 360,000 b/d of crude oil “beyond 2020.”
While the project value is small in comparison with the likely billions of dollars required to add 93,000 b/d of crude distillation unit (CDU) capacity plus upgrading units to produce fuels to the tightest international standards, the work will be pivotal in progressing a project that has spent a long time on the drawing board.
