Algeria: Present Bad, IEA Figures Indicate Future May Be Worse

Not only is the present looking bad for Algeria, so is the future.

At the turn of the millennium Algeria was the MENA region’s top gas producer. But not only has it long since been overtaken by Qatar and Iran (who now with 160 bcm/year each produce twice as much as Algeria), the IEA continues to revise down its forecasts for the country’s future output. The IEA’s latest forecast of 2020 Algerian output at 91 bcm, is not only down by a whopping 8 bcm on the forecast made a year earlier (see graph) it is down by a further 2 bcm from the 93 bcm forecast made in the IEA’s Medium Term Gas Market Report in June (MEES, 5 June).
