Iraq Progresses With Giant Gas-Fired Plant, But Where’s The Fuel?

Amman-based Mass Global Investment has ordered eight gas turbines from US firm General Electric for installation at a 3GW gas-fired power plant to be built 30km southeast of Baghdad near Bismayah, where a major housing development project is under way.

Independent power producer (IPP) Mass Global has awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the power plant to Turkish contractor Enka. GE says the project will be developed in two 1.5GW phases.

Enka says the plant is scheduled for start-up in August 2017. However, this schedule appears overly optimistic, given the dire security problems in Iraq and the government’s already overstretched budgets for its ambitious oil, gas and power projects. (CONTINUED - 441 WORDS)
