Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and its subsidiaries are thought to be taking precautionary security measures as the situation in Iraq deteriorates further. While certainly not the only Gulf country made anxious by events in nearby Iraq, Kuwait’s stormy politics and its sectarian and tribal tensions make it particularly vulnerable to potential blowback from the advances of the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS).
As violence spread across much of Iraq over the past couple of weeks, salafist figureheads in Kuwait have rallied supporters against the Baghdad government of Nuri al-Maliki and refer to the ISIS-spearheaded campaign as the ‘Iraqi revolution,’ rhetoric that will add to internal pressures in Kuwait.
