Iran: Hope All-Pervasive, But Is It Justified?

Iranians see better times ahead if a nuclear deal between Iran and the west can be struck. MEES takes the pulse of a nation which is down but not out.

Many in Iran believe that last year’s decision to engage with the west over the nuclear standoff emanated from the highest authority in the land – Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Deteriorating economic conditions made the sanctions-hit status-quo unsustainable, necessitating a shift to a new tack: Mr Khamenei backed the election of moderate reformer Hassan Rohani in June and the start of negotiations with the west five months later.
