France’s Total moved quickly to fill the void at its helm following the death of Christophe de Margerie.
Following the death of Christophe de Margerie in a plane crash in Moscow on the night of 20-21 October, France’s Total has elected Patrick Pouyanne, who headed its refining and chemical division, as its new chief executive. The board also restored the position of chairman to Thierry Desmarest, Mr de Margerie’s predecessor as CEO.
Total’s Board of Directors on 22 October chose Mr Pouyanne to lead the Total Group through a challenging transition, after the passing of the larger-than-life de Margerie. In Mr Pouyanne, the French oil major has chosen a safe pair of hands, an able steward who can be relied upon to honor the legacy of his predecessor. As part of its effort to ensure continuity, the board brought back honorary chairman and former CEO Thierry Desmarest until the end of 2015. Mr de Margerie had held the two positions since March 2010.
