Gaza: Donors Pledge $5.6Bn

International donors pledged a total of $5.6bn in aid for the reconstruction of Gaza at a 12 October Cairo conference.

This exceeds the $4bn that the Palestinians requested prior to the meeting for the rebuilding of large parts of the Gaza Strip which were heavily bombed by Israel in this summer’s conflict with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which controls Gaza. The war killed more than 2,100 Gazans, mostly civilians; 11,000 were wounded and 100,000 left homeless.

Pledges include: Qatar $1bn; Saudi Arabia $500mn; US $212mn; $200mn each from Kuwait, UAE and Turkey and €450mn from the EU. While these pledges are very encouraging, the actual disbursement of funds is usually slow and in some cases never materializes, past experience shows.
