The US company has also announced some of its largest ever contracts – three deals worth a combined $2.7bn to supply the SPE unit of Algeria’s state power and gas firm Sonelgaz with turbines for nine power plants.

Sonelgaz and GE will build a gas turbines manufacturing plant in Algeria, at an estimated cost of $200mn, Algeria’s state news agency APS announced on 23 September. Sonelgaz will hold a 51% stake and GE 49%. Sonelgaz CEO Nourredine Boutarfa told state radio that the plant would become operational in 2017 and would have a capacity to manufacture six to eight turbines a year. The plant will be built at Ain Yagout, 435km east of Algiers. GE said the total capacity of the turbines built there each year would rise to more than 2GW. (CONTINUED - 879 WORDS)
