Ras al-Khaimah (RAK) plans to invite bids for separate solar power and desalination plants worth a combined $450mn in a tender to be organized in 2014 by local private utility Utico. The solar plant will have 20MW capacity, whilst the desalination plant will produce up to 10,000 cmd of potable water. The company did not reveal sites for the plants, saying only they would be built in strategic locations.

Utico also plans to begin construction in early 2014 of a Dh1.5bn ($408.4mn,) 270MW state-of-the-art coal-fired power plant, a JV with Shanghai Electric to incorporate the Chinese firm’s proprietary technology. The plant will also use carbon capture and storage and is slated for 2015 completion. (CONTINUED - 270 WORDS)
