Many Iranians expect that the goodwill generated by President Hassan Rohani’s UN speech last month will open the way for some relaxation of the stringent regime of western sanctions. But, speaking to MEES this week, Total CEO Christophe de Margerie and his Shell counterpart Peter Voser remain cautious as regards any possible opening.

The Iranian parliament on 2 October strongly endorsed Mr Rohani’s diplomatic gestures: 230 deputies out of 290 signed a statement of support. This parliamentary endorsement suggests that Mr Rohani had the green light from the Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to try and seek better relations with the outside world.
