Qatar Petroleum International (QPI), previously understood to be interested in snagging the upstream assets of German utility company, RWE, has changed its calculus as of late.

RWE has asked firms interested in its upstream unit, RWE-Dea, to submit bids by the end of December – but QPI is unlikely to be among the suitors. Political considerations are surely at play: Qatar does not want to get further entangled with Egypt as it was a key ally of the Muslim Brotherhood leadership ousted by the Egyptian army in July, and remains displeased by the coup.
