Egypt’s plan to turn El Hamra into a Mediterranean crude and products hub has moved closer to reality. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on 1 September reviewed progress with Fujairah officials on the newly established Fujairah-Alamein Oil & Gas company, urging faster completion of the remaining procedures needed to move the project into operation.
El Hamra is an incongruous place for such an ambition. Along Egypt’s “North Coast,” the World War II cemeteries and memorials around El Alamein sit beside turquoise water, white-sand beaches and the summer compounds that now define the area.
