Egypt’s electricity consumption this week hit a record 39.4GW according to Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. Speaking after his weekly Cabinet meeting on 30 July the PM apologized to the residents of Giza who suffered prolonged power cuts on 26 July after an electrical fire involving power cables resulted in a “failure at the Geziret el Daha substation.” The fire was caused by a surge in electricity demand as temperatures have soared according to local media reports.

Residents of Giza, which is situated on the west bank of the Nile near Cairo, were left without power for up to 12 hours. PM Madbouly revealed that peak load of 39.4GW surpassed last year’s previous record of 38GW. (CONTINUED - 212 WORDS)
