Dubai-based Amea Power announced on 15 July that it has successfully commissioned Egypt’s “first-ever utility-scaled Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).”

The 300MWh battery storage facility is an extension of the firm’s 500MW ‘Abydos I’ solar PV plant at Kom Ombo in southern Egypt which officially began operations in December last year (MEES, 3 January). Amea is not resting on its laurels and inked a deal in February for a further 1.5GWh of battery storage in Egypt to add to the 300MWh at ‘Abydos I’ and the 900MWh of storage at the planned 1GW ‘Abydos II’ solar PV plant at Benban (MEES, 28 February). Egypt’s installed solar capacity stood at 2.5GW at the end of 2024 according to the state’s New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA). (CONTINUED - 224 WORDS)
