Oman’s largest hydrocarbon producer Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) announced a call for expressions of interest in developing “more than 1 billion barrels of STOIIP [Stock Tank Oil Initially In Place].” According to the request the “Area-A” under offer spans 130km2 around the Qarn Alam cluster in the north of PDO’s massive Block 6. Developers will have access to 13 wells previously drilled to access the heavy oil (12-14° API).

PDO last year put out a similar request to develop heavy oil resources, but has not yet made any award (MEES, 26 July 2024). PDO has previously signed service agreements to allow private companies to operate fields within Block 6, most notably the Karim and Rima small field clusters operated by Indonesia’s Medco and Malaysia’s Petrogas (see map, MEES, 21 May).
