Iraq and Excelerate Energy will sign a contract to build the country’s first floating LNG import terminal imminently. The Iraqi cabinet approved the draft contract on 21 October following negotiations involving the ministries of oil, electricity and transport.

The US LNG specialist had earlier this month been given an official award letter for the project which will include leasing an FSRU to Iraq (MEES, 10 October). The oil ministry previously indicated that a berth at Basra’s Khor al-Zubair products terminal would be converted to handle up to 750mn cfd of LNG imports, despite concerns over its shallow depth (MEES, 30 May).
