Italy’s Eni is poised to drill an exploration well in Ras al-Khaimah’s onshore Block 7 in the coming weeks. Activity in RAK’s upstream sector is heating up, with Poland’s PKN Orlen striking gas in Block 5 in September, while Eni last year drilled a well in the offshore Block A. Results from that offshore well are still being appraised. Now, Eni is gearing up to drill its first well at Block 7, which an informed source says is targeting a play similar to the Mahani discovery Eni made in Sharjah in 2020 and which was brought online in 2021 (MEES, 8 January 2021). While RAK receives pipeline gas from Abu Dhabi and from Qatar for its power plants, the emirate is hoping for local supplies to increase its resilience.
