UAE President Muhammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to Ethiopia last week demonstrated many of the core tenets of the country’s rising international political influence. Ethiopia has emerged as an important partner for the UAE in the Horn of Africa, and the trip further solidifies this relationship while also bolstering the UAE’s environmental messaging ahead of Cop 28.

The UAE President arrived in Ethiopia on 18 August at the head of a high-level delegation, and was welcomed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The pair oversaw the signing of multiple preliminary agreements during the visit, with notable projects planned by UAE state-energy firms Adnoc and Masdar.
