A landmark deal signed in November last year between Israel, Jordan and the UAE took a step forward this week as the three parties signed an MoU on the sidelines of the Cop 27 climate summit at Sharm El Sheikh on Egypt’s Red Sea coast.

The deal, which was initially a ‘declaration of intent’ has received heavy US backing and envisages Jordan supplying Israel with electricity from 600MW solar PV capacity in return for up to 200mn m³ per year of desalinated water (MEES, 26 November 2021). The UAE’s involvement will come via Abu Dhabi state renewables firm Masdar which will build the solar facility in Jordan.
