Saudi Arabia’s renewables program has taken a major step forward with the recent award of power purchase agreements (PPA) for seven solar energy projects. With one of the projects easily setting a new record-low tariff, Middle East states continue to lead the way in pushing down solar electricity costs.

All told, the awards to five different consortia have a cumulative capacity of 2.97GW. When added to existing and under-construction projects, these seven plants will boost the kingdom’s renewable capacity from its current 310MW to 3.67GW. The projects are slated to start-up by the end of 2022, the same year as the under-construction 400MW Dumat Al Jandal wind farm. (CONTINUED - 1487 WORDS)
