UAE state firms Adnoc and Taqa have brought foreign partners into their $3.6bn project to connect Adnoc’s offshore operations to the grid through high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines. ‘Project Lightning’ comprises two HVDC lines and convertor stations linking Arzanah Island, the Das Island terminals and the Umm Shaif field to Taqa’s onshore electricity grid (MEES, 1 May 2020).

Construction is to begin in 2022, with commercial operations beginning in 2025. Once operational, Adnoc’s offshore operations can be supplied with renewable and nuclear-generated electricity (MEES, 29 October), which Adnoc says will cut its offshore carbon footprint by more than 30%.
