ordanian Energy Minister Hala al-Zawati announced “promising results” this week from ongoing drilling at the country’s sole producing gas field. The Risha field produces 19mn cfd on the Jordan-Iraq border. The size of ‘well-53’ will be announced by the end of the year, and builds on the 3mn cfd ‘well-49’ brought online last December (MEES, 29 December 2019). Results from three other exploration wells are expected soon – but given the relatively small size of the field, which BP abandoned in 2014 (MEES, 24 January 2014), the country’s growing renewables sector remains its best hope of achieving its goal of 50% domestically fueled power generation by 2030 (MEES, 31 July).
